Molasses Cures

Thanks to the wonderful feedback we have received over the past eight years, blackstrap molasses appears to be making headlines as one of the best home remedies around! We have emails from our readers about blackstrap molasses curing cancerous tumors, fibroid tumors, anxiety, constipation, edema, heart palpitations, anemia, arthritic pain, joint pain, and acne, just to name a few. It has also been reported that molasses turns gray hair back to its original color and is a wonderful skin softener!

Balsamic Pine Vinegar

by Susan Weed of Wise Woman

Pine needle vinegar is an exquisite treat that is easy to make. I call it homemade “balsamic” vinegar.
Fill a jar with pine needles. (I prefer white pine, and pinyon pine is even better, but the needles of any pine are fine.)
Cover needles completely with apple cider vinegar, filling the jar to the top and capping with a plastic lid or a piece of plastic wrap held in place with a rubber band. This vinegar, like most that I make, is ready to use in six weeks.

Pine vinegar is rich in flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. It helps keep the immune system strong, and strengthens the lungs as well. I love it on salads.

Bananas

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression “going bananas” is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on: Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
This is interesting.
After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.

But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work?: Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal dis orders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a “cooling” fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away!”

Spring Vegetable Juice

“Flu Fighters”
Influenza is a viral infection of the respiratory tract. Symptoms can include chills, fever, coughs, headache, fatigue and lack of appetite. Eating small meals, mainly vegetable juices, reduces the energy required to digestion, allowing more energy to be focused on healing.

Spring Vegetable Juice

– 10 spears asparagus, washed
– 2 beets (with tops); scrubbed and cut into pcs.
– 6 spinach leaves, washed
– 1 handful watercress or dandelion leaves, washed
– 1 apple, washed and cut into pcs.
– 2 tbsp maple sap (optional)
– Using juicer, process asparagus, beets, beet tops, spinach, watercress, and apple.
– Whisk together and pour into a glass. Whisk in maple sap (if using).

Chocolate – Good for the Heart!

Cocoa can function in the same way as aspirin in preventing heart attacks. Scientists at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine say that a few squares of chocolate a day can reduce the risk of a heart attack by almost 50 per cent in some cases. The discovery came after volunteers for a trial on the effects of aspirin were disqualified for eating chocolate, despite being warned that this would interfere with results from the study. Despite being barred from participating in the drug study, the chocolate-eaters blood were examined and compared with others who hadn’t indulged in order to determine what effect cocoa has on platelets. Platelets from those who had eaten chocolate clotted more slowly than those who had not – taking an average of 130 seconds to clump together compared to 123. Professor Diane Becker said: “What these chocolate ‘offenders’ taught us is that the chemical in cocoa beans has a biochemical effect similar to aspirin in reducing platelet clumping, which can be fatal if a clot forms and blocks a blood vessel, causing a heart attack.” The American Heart Association’s annual Scientific Sessions Nov, 2006.

Turmeric And It's Healing Properties

Curcuma longa

Also known as Turmeric, is a spice commonly used in curries and other South Asian cuisine.
Turmeric is also used to give a yellow color to some prepared mustards, and other foods (often as a much cheaper replacement for saffron). It makes a poor fabric dye as it is not very lightfast.
Turmeric, a representative of plant genus Curcuma, is a member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae.
In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is thought to have many healthful properties. It is taken in some Asian countries as a dietary supplement, which allegedly helps with stomach problems and other ailments. It is popular as a tea in Okinawa, Japan. It is currently being investigated for possible benefits in Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and liver disorders. It serves as a strong anti-inflammatory, blood purifier, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, bruises, colic, ulcers, haemorrhages, and yeast infections, antiseptic. It can be used internally and externally to heal wounds, relieve pains in the limbs and break up congestion.
Turmeric makes an excellent arthritis tea.

Turmeric Arthritis Tea Recipe

Benefits of Aloe Vera

FOR BURNS
Remember what grandma use to say: “that plant is good for everything!”… Keep a potted aloe on your widnow sill. It requires no care, except a weekly watering and, of course, love. For minor burns, snip off a leaf, slit it open and scoop out some gel from the inner leaf. Apply it to the burn.

ALOE VERA AND THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Aloe Vera has been recognised for centuries for its remarkable health-enhancing properties. Although known specifically for external application to the skin, Aloe Juice is now widely used to help a variety of conditions of the digestive tract.
It is important at this stage to stress that, as with any medical condition, a pain in the abdomen should be referred to a medical practitioner in the first instance.
Research work carried out over many years points conclusively to a toxic colon being the cause of a very wide range of illnesses, from minor to very serious. It is widely recognised that problems of the bowel are on the increase with many millions of people suffering a range of conditions including colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease and spastic colon – this latter condition more commonly known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
IBS is considered to be the most common of these disorders and symptoms are varied, including exhaustion, lower back pain, constipation, diarrhoea and indigestion. The condition can be most distressing and can continually recur in spite of orthodox treatment.
The digestive tract is designed to ensure nutrients from food are absorbed into the blood stream whilst dispensing with the unwanted waste. Bacteria plays a major role in achieving the breakdown of food matter but, in doing so, also produces toxins. This is perfectly normal and in a healthy system the level of toxins is controlled. Nowadays our diet includes many unwanted substances including various chemicals, fats, insecticides etc. which can result in a high level of toxins, some of which can be poisonous. If these are absorbed into the blood the effect can give rise to a variety of conditions including lethargy and even food poisoning.
The bowel can gradually ‘fur up’ with a lining of unabsorbed food residues. These deposits become impacted and prevent essential nutrients from our diet being absorbed. This situation gives rise to nutrient deficiency which in turn can cause lethargy and exhaustion whilst the affected colon can be the cause of lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation.
Colonic irrigation is a technique which loosens and washes out these residues. Some practitioners are finding that Aloe Vera Juice, if taken daily for a period of several weeks, helps to ensure that the irrigation process is greatly facilitated. However, it is more usual to find that a regular, daily course of Aloe Vera Juice is sufficient to gently and gradually break down, loosen and assist in the natural dispersal of these residues.
Detoxification also takes place and the results are often most gratifying with reports of ability to enjoy a wider range of foods, relief from pain, reducing or dispensing with prescribed bulking agents or antispasmodic drugs and also a greater feeling of well-being and an improvement in the quality of life.
In establishing a regime of a regular daily dose of Aloe Vera Juice it may not only be found that the effects are gradual, gentle and with no irritant or harmful side effects, but also blood condition will be improved due to Aloe Vera’s ability to detoxify. Also, being a natural healer, any internal ulcers or lesions will be soothed and healing will be enhanced.

ALOE VERA AND ARTHRITIS
Aloe Vera is a stimulant to the immune system, a powerful anti- inflammatory, an analgesic and is able to speed up cell growth. Aloe Vera contains a large number of mucopolysaccharides (basic sugars) which are found in every cell in the body. Aloe also contains large numbers of nutrients including vitamins E, C, B1, 2, 3, and 6 as well as iron, manganese, calcium and zinc. Seven essential amino acids and fatty acids are also found in Aloe Vera.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful, debilitating condition. It manifests itself as stiff, swollen joints with varying degrees of associated pain caused partly due to nerve damage and partly by the pressure of the swollen area.
The swollen area is normally red in colour and described as inflamed. The redness is caused by the blood supply to the ‘damaged’ area being increased.
Conventional treatment includes use of anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids, typically cortisone injections or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These certainly can ease the painful effects but unfortunately do not repair damaged tissues. There can also be undesirable side effects, particularly thinning of the skin and osteoporosis. Although many NSAIDs are available, each one has the potential to cause stomach ulcers.
Repairing damaged tissue by regenerating cells is a function at which Aloe Vera has been shown to be most successful. It not only relieves the painful symptoms but also helps to disperse damaged tissue – a type of detoxification process. Aloe Vera may be taken both internally as a juice or as a gel applied to the painful joint. Here Aloe Vera’s deep penetration may show benefit.
The degree of success with this treatment varies considerably from person to person. With some, relief and improved joint flexibility is virtually immediate – an apparent ‘magical’ cure, whereas in others, the process can take much longer and the degree of recovery may not be so great.
In any event, an important fact must be remembered: Aloe Vera has no known adverse side effects. It is an extract from the leaf of the Aloe Vera plant, known throughout the world where it grows naturally as the ‘First Aid Plant’, the ‘Burn Plant’, the ‘Miracle Plant’ and the ‘Medicine Plant’.

Pomegranate Juice Against Arthritis

Q: Can pomegranate juice help against arthritis, as I’ve read? What about other benefits?

A: It’s too soon to say. A lab study at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland found that pomegranate fruit extract inhibited the breakdown of human joint cartilage cells in test tubes. But no studies have tested the juice in people with osteoarthritis.

As we’ve reported, there are other reasons to consume pomegranates. Their plump red seeds are rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants. Pomegranates also contain lots of vitamin C and potassium. Research has shown that pomegranate juice can lower blood pressure by 5% in people with hypertension and lessen damage by LDL (“bad”) cholesterol on artery walls. In a recent small study in the American Journal of Cardiology, one cup of juice a day for three months improved blood flow to the heart in people with coronary artery disease.

But watch the calories. The leading brand, POM Wonderful, lists 140 per cup. You may want to dilute it with water because of its tartness, which would also reduce the calories. Processing the fruit into juice destroys the vitamin C, which may or may not be added back. And the juice is expensive.

Garlic's Healing Properties

Garlic is part of the onion, chives, and leek family. It’s been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. From the ancient times through WWI, garlic has been used to treat the wounded.

During the 1920s, researchers at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland isolated garlic’s antibiotic compound, alliin, which has no medical value until the herb is chewed, chopped or crushed. Then an enzyme transforms aliin into a powerful antibiotic called allicin.

An another compound, ajoene, appears responsible for reducing blood clots.

Modern antibiotics are more potent and easier to take, but if you’re concerned about ulcers, use more garlic in your diet. Researchers at the University of Washington have shown that garlic kills H.pylori, the bacteria that cause ulcers.

Garlic can also reduce LDL cholesterol while boosting the “good” HDL cholesterol. This can take two to four months to show.

It can also lower triglycerides and blood pressure. This can take from one to six months.

Garlic can also help with circulation and by managing cholesterol ensures that arteries stay clean.

It fights infections (external and internal), may help coughs, asthma, fevers, fungal infections, ear and sinus infections, and gastric upsets.

Raw garlic has the most antibiotic potency. Although it still has benefits, when cooked its effectiveness will be reduced by eliminating certain compounds .

Contraindications: patients taking anticoagulants, hypoglycemic drugs, those with allergies and pregnant women. If taken with diuretics it can result in hypertension or diuresis. People with gastrointestinal irritation should use caution.

Side effects: occasional hearthburn and gastrointestinal problems; may cause eruptions of the skin.

Mostly, garlic is very safe.

Eat anywhere from one to five cloves a day, or take about four grams of minced garlic a day. Try enteric-coated pills for best result, as they preserve the active compounds. Pills are also odourless. You need about 4,000 mg a day.
