Yogi Bhajan’s May Clove Recipe

cloves

For the Month of May Only

Spring is often a time of cleansing and processing, which in turn makes one more vulnerable to colds and flu. Here is a reminder from Gurusahay Singh Khalsa, D.C., about a remedy for the month of May.

Take a handful of cloves and soak them in room temperature water overnight. First thing in the morning, when you brush your teeth, take 3-4 tablespoons of the clove water (not more than 5–don’t overdo it).

“It will save you from a lot of viral diseases. The month of May breeds viruses. Your ears, nose, and throat will be all right. Symptoms will almost not appear. It you do it every year, you will never fall apart.” – Yogi Bhajan

10 Green DIY Home, Health and Beauty Tips: The Miracle of Apple Cider Vinegar
by Yumi Sakugawa

Apple cider vinegar is my favorite new DIY household product. Just as how baking soda has a huge range of uses from personal self-care to household cleaning (see this fabulous post by Olivia here), apple cider vinegar can do pretty much anything–for your skin, your hair, your house, and even your pets.applephoto.jpg

I learned about apple cider vinegar when I was researching ways to get rid of the fleas that had unfortunately begun cropping up in my apartment from my roommates’ two cats. Apple cider vinegar, apparently, when rubbed on the pet and added to the pet’s water, can greatly help repel the fleas from the animal.

Why should we all start using more apple cider vinegar? First of all, apple cider vinegar is a completely natural product: apple juice is fermented to hard apple cider, which is fermented a second time to apple cider vinegar. In integrating this natural product into our homes, we instantly decrease the consumption of unnatural chemicals in our daily lives.

Here are many other benefits of apple cider vinegar that can be applied to your lifestyle. Read the list below.

BEAUTY:

Hair: It is widely known that apple cider vinegar can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing to add healthy body and shine. Recyle an old shampoo bottle and fill it with 1/2 a table spoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour through your hair after shampooing several times a week.

Face: Did you know that apple cider vinegar can help regulate the pH of your skin? Dilute apple cider vinegar with two parts water, and spread the concoction over your face with a cotton ball as a toner. You can do this at night after washing, and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. You can also dab apple cider vinegar directly onto age spots and leave them on overnight to lighten their color.

Hands and Feet: Are your hands and feet feeling tired and swollen after a long day? Treat yourself to a personal spa massage by rubbing apple cider vinegar onto them.

Sunburn: Suffering from a bad sunburn? Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath and soak for 10 minutes.

Teeth: Did you know that apple cider vinegar can help remove stains from teeth? Rub teeth directly with apple cider vinegar and rinse out.

Aftershave: Fill a bottle with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and shake to blend.

HEALTH:

Weight-Loss: For daily weight and pH balance maintenance, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 16 oz of water. Sip this concoction throughout the day.

Detox: Add 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a 1 or 2 liter filtered water bottle. Drink this throughout the day to cleanse your body and kidneys all day long.

HOME AND PETS

Cleaning: Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup water. You can use this concoction to clean microwaves, bathroom tiles, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and mirrors. This mixture also works as a disinfectant.

Flea Reduction: Rub apple cider vinegar onto your pet’s skin. Add a little bit of apple cider vinegar to their water. Spray apple cider vinegar, diluted 50% with water, onto your pets and onto your furniture to repel the presence of fleas.

Yerba_Matte_tea

Yerba Mate – The miracle tonic beverage

It grows in South America and is made from a species of the holly plant. For centuries, a group of indigenous tribes partaked in this amazing beverage. These days, it’s the drink of choice for many South Americans and has been migrating to other parts of the world as well, like America!

In many different studies over the years, it’s been determined that Yerba Mate is comprised of over a 100 different compounds that make it the healthy drink that it is. Plus, it has an array of amazing qualities that can help us through the many ups and downs of life.

Believe it or not, here are some of the benefits: enhances intellectual work by stimulating mental energy (but without the jolt or jitteriness of coffee), lessens fatigue, provides clarity and alertness, increases concentration, has a calming effect (seems like a paradox but it’s true!), increases metabolism if you’re interested in losing weight, lessens digestive acidity because of its alkaline-nature, helps with feelings of depression, and reduces stress.

Yerba Mate does contain caffeine but only about a third of what coffee has and less than green tea. But what’s interesting about the fact that it does contain caffeine is that many people find that they have no problem going to sleep after drinking it and will often have a cup before bed! It has something to do with how all the compounds work together.

Numerous studies over the years and specifically a 1964 study of the leaves by the “Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society” found that this herb contains a tremendous amount of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and 15 amino acids (the building blocks of protein). And since the nutrients are in liquid form they are more easily absorbed by the body. Another study by researchers at the University of Illinois in 2005 found that the herb inhibits cancer-cell proliferation, pretty amazing!

The reason researchers believe that it helps with feelings of depression is that it contains naturally-occurring monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s) which, in the synthetic version, are the primary chemicals used in anti-depressants and are also sometimes prescribed to help people quit smoking. Another compound in Yerba Mate is theobromine, which is the “bliss” chemical found in chocolate.

It’s usually sold in tea bags or in loose form and is prepared like regular tea. To give it a richer flavor than just making it with water, it can also be made with soy milk, almond milk, hemp milk or cow’s milk. However, if you would like the healthiest drink possible for yourself, it’s best to make it with either almond or hemp milk. Soy milk is slightly acidic, genetically modified and dairy milk is so unbelievably acidic along with a variety of other reasons to not drink it, too many to go into now. Between the two, though, soy is definitely the better choice, AND if you’re still not there yet in not drinking dairy, that’s perfectly fine, at least you’re off-setting it with Yerba Mate!

If you really get into it and want to drink it the traditional way as many South Americans do, you may want to purchase a gourd (a hollowed-out seed from a fruit that is about the same size, if not a little larger, as a cup) and sip from it with a bombilla, which is a metal straw.

Well, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy and may you be healthier and happier from it!

Here are some good companies who sell it either by mail order or health food stores. PLEASE NOTE: Neither zLighthouse or LoveDriven, get absolutely no “kick-backs” from mentioning any companies on this site.

The Amazing Cucumber

cucumber

This information was in ‘The New York Times’ as part of their “Spotlight on the Home” series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon,? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates
that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror. It will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes. The phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly-cut cucumber over the shoe.
Its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a pot of boiling water. The chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath. The phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean. Not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing – also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!

Space Syrup

THE STORY

Lavinia Ritkiss, a healer in Los Angeles, has been given a recipe for what
seems to be a miracle cure. The healer says her amazing “space syrup” was a gift to humankind…

Mrs Ritkiss says she mixed up a batch of the syrup the next day and because it contained nothing she felt would harm her, she took a teaspoon every day for a month to see what would happen.

“I couldn’t believe what it did for me!” she says. “My arthritis is gone, my
skin glows, even my teeth and hair are different. I feel like a teenager
again. Since then, I have shared the recipe with hundreds of people and it
has cured everything – acne, heart disease, depression and even cancer. The syrup is so wonderful, I know I have to tell everybody about it. It’s a
miracle gift, a token of love from outer space.”

Mrs. Ritkiss says she plans to distribute a pamphlet about the space syrup sometime later this year. In the meantime, however, she has provided the formula so people can start enjoying good health right away.

THE RECIPE

2 tsp. diced fresh garlic
3 T. olive oil
5 T. pure clover honey
1 T. apple cider vinegar
½ tsp. cayenne
¼ tsp. asafetida (optional)
¼ cup strong green tea, freshly made

Sauté garlic in olive oil for 1 minute, then add other ingredients. Simmer
and cook over low flame for 5 minutes. Let cool. Strain into glass jar.
Cover and refrigerate. (Makes enough for a week with one teaspoon a day)

Healing With Turmeric

Turmeric, the spice that gives yellow curry its color, is widely used in Asia not only for its earthy flavor but also for its therapeutic power. In ancient Hindu medicine, it was used to treat sprains and swelling. Modern medicine uncovered its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which have been used to treat everything from liver disorders and diabetic wounds to runny noses. Some bandage brands in India even contain turmeric as a disinfectant. Recently, scientists added another potential benefit to the list: preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Intrigued by the fact that the elderly population of India has one of the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s cases in the world, researchers at UCLA began looking at differences between the American and Indian diets and landed on turmeric. Turmeric, a staple in Indian cooking, is featured in curries, soups, and meat dishes. It’s as common in Indian cuisine as salt and pepper are in American cuisine. Bharat B. Aggarwal, a senior cancer researcher at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, says the average Indian eats turmeric at every meal—about a gram a day. The UCLA group hypothesized that curcumin, a chemical in turmeric, might clean up or block the buildup of amyloid plaques, which scientists believe may contribute to Alzheimer’s.
Most interestingly, in UCLA’s human trial, Alzheimer’s patients were given high doses of curcumin in a supplement, and yet none of the chemical was absorbed. The researchers now believe that curcumin must first be dissolved through cooking in fat in order to be effective on the Alzheimer’s brain. According to UCLA researcher Sally Frautschy, this is why people should cook with turmeric rather than take supplements. However, researchers all over the country are having trouble getting funding for future trials, says Frautschy, even though this data strongly suggests that Alzheimer’s may be mostly preventable.
Future studies are needed to pinpoint the exact amount of turmeric that’s effective in fighting Alzheimer’s, but if you want to increase your curcumin intake in the meantime, it can’t hurt to try some new turmeric-rich recipes. Turmeric, whether used as fresh root or as dry powder, contains 5 percent curcumin. Studies have shown that turmeric from Curcuma Longa plants in Southeast Asia contain more curcumin than turmeric found in the plants of East Asia. (And be careful not to substitute curry powder for turmeric—some curry powders contain hardly any curcumin at all.)

Yogi Chai

This is the recipe for the yummy chai we serve after a kundalini yoga class.

– 2 tbs whole cloves
– ¼ cup whole cardamon pods (green)
– 1 tbs whole black peppercorns
– Fresh ginger root- about ½ to 1 inch – optional
– 3 small cinnamon sticks
– ¼ tsp of black tea – *optional (ok to leave out as some are allergic to blk tea. I leave this ingredient out)
– Almond milk (I personally use Almond Breeze Vanilla Milk and it tastes super deliciousAnd if i find Almond Beeze Coconut Vanilla milk i use that ^.~), rice milk or soy milk can also be used

~ To 5 quarts of boiling water add the first 5 ingredients on the list.

~ Continue low boiling for at least 30-60 minutes, then turn it off and let it steep for at least an hour (with a ¼ teaspoon of any black tea or tea bag – optional). Strain and refrigerate until time to serve.

~ When ready to serve, add amount of cold milk equal to the amount of tea you want to serve (ie: 1 cup of yogi tea + 1 cup of milk), heat thoroughly -almost to boil, don’t let it boil over. Serve and enjoy!

It may also be enjoyed without milk, adding some agave or maple syrup.

Nutrition Facts: The black pepper is a blood purifier, the cardamon is for the colon, the cloves for the nervous system and the cinnamon is for the bones. The milk aids in the easy assimilation of the spices and avoids irritation to the colon. The black tea act as an alloy for all the ingredients, achieving a new chemical structure which makes tea a healthy as well as a delicious drink. The fresh ginger root will help if you are suffering from a cold, recovering from the flu or just want some extra energy.

Tip: Add milk to the amount you will be drinking and save the rest of the tea in the refrigerator -without milk-, it will stay up to six months! You may also cool and drink as Iced YogiChai, or freeze and make yogichai ice cubes!

Dr. God & The Goods of the Earth

It’s been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, then made dry land, planted a garden of herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers, made fish and animals… all before making a human. God made and provided what we would need before we were born and through Mother Earth continues to make sure we receive the goods we need for a healthy life. These gifts are best and more powerful when eaten raw… but we’re such slow learners.
God left us great clues to know what foods help what part of our body, let’s find these clues and live the Good Life.

Welcome to God’s Pharmacy!

CARROTS

A sliced Carrot resembles the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye… and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

TOMATOES

A Tomato has four chambers and is of the color red, much like the heart which also has four chambers and is red. Research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

GRAPES

Grapes hang in a cluster taking the shape of the heart, and each individual grape looks like a blood cell. Research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

WALNUTS

A Walnut looks like a brain, the left and right hemispheres, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

KIDNEY BEANS

Kidney Beans look exactly like the human kidneys and, yes, they literally heal and help maintain kidney function.

CELERY, BOK CHOY, RHUBARD, ETC.

The many more that look just like bones are in fact beneficial to the bone structure. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don’t have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

AVOCADO

Avocado, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female body, they look just like these organs. Today’s research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

FIGS

Figs are full of seeds and hang in 2s when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

SWEET POTATOS

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

OLIVES

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

CITRUS FRUITS: ORANGES, GRAPEFRUITS, ETC.

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

ONIONS

Onions look like the cells in the body. Research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

Live Happy! Live Healthy!

*Note: This article came to me in the form of a circulating email. I edited and added tips I learned in the course of my years in holistic therapeutic practice and study.

Himalayan Crystal Salt

For years, now, we’ve heard people talking about the dangers of salt. We’ve learned how it can lead to or aggravate many poor health conditions. Some say that we need to eliminate salt from our diet. It’s true, and there’s more to the story.

Common Table Salt is the Culprit People Say It Is

First, every living animal needs salt to survive. The proper salt can provide beneficial nutrients and minerals. It can help regulate our pH levels and can guard against dehydration in some instances. I know, you’ve never heard that about salt. And with good reason-it’s not true of common salt.

Common salt is a heavily processed substance that is used in industrial applications all over the world. Only 3% of the common salt produced is meant for human consumption. Common table salt lays a heavy burden on your body with the toxins it presents. Any benefit that salt had was bleached and chemically stripped from it leaving the common table salt that we most often use today.

Better Salt for Your Body

Beneficial, good salt is not processed, but naturally collected from deposits in the earth. The best salt is Himalayan Crystal Salt and it’s the purest salt in the world, hand-collected from salt deposits that have been in the earth for more than 200 million years. This salt is nutritious throughout its substance. So if you chip off the top or dig deep to collect it, the compliment of nutrients is the same in each piece. What this means is that you can use large chunks or tiny, table-salt sized granules and still receive the full benefit.

Himalayan Crystal Salt has in it the same 84 minerals that can be found in sea water. It’s the same 84 minerals that are found in the water of our bodies. Even though our body water is very similar to sea water, sea salt is not the best thing for us either. Sea salt has a similar disadvantage to common table salt. Although it’s not as toxic as common table salt, because it’s processed, some of its nutritive value is depleted. There’s really nothing as healthful as Himalayan Crystal Salt.

Benefits of Himalayan Crystal Salt

Internally and externally, there is no better salt than pure Himalayan Crystal Salt. And, as a food additive, you can feel safe in knowing that you’re not flavoring your dishes with toxins. You can drink sole daily, to encourage good health for your whole body. Himalayan crystal salt can do some powerful things including:

Replenish electrolytes, the body’s power source
Heartbeat regulation
Soothe aching, sore muscles
Skin revitalization
Guard against dehydration

Because Himalayan Crystal Salt is the embodiment of living energy, you can mix it with purified water, to release that power. One of the great ways to release the benefits of this living energy is to prepare sole.

To drink daily, add 1 teaspoon of 26% sole solution to a glass of purified water. Mixing sole with purified water to get a 1% sole solution, you can use it for the following:

Gargle during throat or sinus infections
Rinse your eyes
Clean wounds
Flush sinuses
