DAILY CLICKS

TAKE ACTION

Do It For Them!
Speak Up Against The Canadian Seal Slaughter

by PeTA.org

All eyes are on Canada as it prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. This extra attention will bring increased scrutiny and comes with the added responsibility of setting a positive example for the world. That’s why we are calling on the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee to use its clout to help stop the Canadian seal slaughter.

During Canada’s annual seal massacre, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are shot or have their skulls crushed, all for the sake of “fashion.” Sealers routinely hook seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging the pelt, then drag the seals across the ice, in many cases without checking to ensure that they are unconscious.

Baby seals stand no chance against club-wielding trappers, and they must look on as fellow pups are bludgeoned to death before meeting the same bloody fate. The anguish that a mother seal feels as she watches her baby being beaten to death just a few feet away from her is horrifying and can be heard in her desperate cries and seen in her attempts to get to her baby.

The 2009 seal slaughter has ended, but PETA’s campaign to stop the massacre permanently has just begun. It’s clear that the Canadian seal slaughter is quickly losing favor and support: This year, about three-fourths of the seals who were scheduled to be bludgeoned or shot to death were spared. But we still need your help to make sure Canada doesn’t think the protests will end just because the killing slowed. Urge Canada’s prime minister and the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee to help stop the slaughter forever.

->Take Action. Please write to the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee and demand that it help bring an immediate end to the seal slaughter. Thank you for taking action against the cruel seal slaughter.

Meat’s Not Green
Petition

You’re concerned about the planet and its inhabitants, and you want to help stop global warming. But you know that changing your light bulbs isn’t really going to save the planet.

What is the number one cause of global warming? The answer is a four letter word: M-E-A-T.

Why? Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions are the leading cause of global warming. The reason is simple: Every second, animals raised for food in the U.S. produce 89,000 pounds of waste—that’s 130 times more than the country’s entire human population.

As if that weren’t bad enough, the billions of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows who are crammed together and abused on factory farms give off enormous amounts of polluting gases.

Also, producing one calorie of plant foods—like beans, veggies, and grains—uses just 10 percent of the amount of fossil fuels that it takes to produce one calorie of meat! Eating meat is like driving a whole fleet of cars around the block every time that you sit down to eat.

->Take Action. You can help warn consumers about what they’re actually buying! Sign our petition to get all meat properly labeled with a warning that clearly states that meat is the number one cause of global warming.

TOGETHER WE CAN
Stop Puppy Mills

The Humane Society of the United States recently released the results of a shocking investigation showing Petland Inc., is the nation’s largest retail supporter of puppy mills. Thank you for speaking out!
Since HSUS investigation into Petland broke on Nov. 20, tens of thousands of advocates contacted Petland and urged the chain to stop selling puppies. But we’re not done telling Petland to stop supporting puppy mill cruelty — HSUS needs our help!

->Take Action. Please help us spread the word and tell your family and friends to take action. Ask Petland to stop supporting the cruel puppy mill industry.
Visit our Pets Against Puppy Mills photo page to see how pets are speaking out against puppy mills. Be sure to upload your pets’ photos to the page today and have their voices heard, too.
You can also speak out against puppy mill cruelty by wearing one of our Stop Puppy Mills T-shirts, or with a bumper sticker, poster, or tote bag.

Angel For Animals

As thwinter weather sets in, neglected, backyard dogs face freezing cold, snow, wind, and rain. For many of these animals, a sturdily constructed doghouse can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why PETA’s wonderful “Angel for Animals” program is so important

->Take Action. Won’t you be an “angel” for a lonely dog this year?
As an “angel” for animals, you can sponsor a specially designed and built doghouse that will provide a needy dog with shelter to see him or her through this winter–and the worst weather for many years to come.

Clay County Officials Experimenting on Homeless Dogs

On September 10, A Rottweiler named Diamond died after she was reportedly left for at least one hour in a county animal control vehicle without air conditioning, water, or fresh air on a day when temperatures reached 85ºF. In response, county officials conducted a crude “experiment” on another dog to see if he or she would die. According to news reports and internal county documents, on September 25, when temperatures were in the mid-80s, another dog was taken from the county’s animal shelter and locked for one hour in the same compartment in which Diamond died in the county’s animal control van.

->Take Action. Use this online form to demand that Clay County Commissioners immediately implement policies to be strictly followed by animal control staff to prevent future tragedies. Let them know that using live animals in dangerous experiments in an attempt to dodge responsibility is unacceptable, and urge them to investigate fully any criminal wrongdoing by county representatives who were responsible for this cruel and outrageous “experiment.”

Wild Horses And Burros Should Roam Free

Over the past few weeks, countless news articles have circulated regarding the BLM’s dilemma of caring for 32,000 warehoused wild horses and the announcement that in addition to halting gathers, the agency may begin euthanizing horses in holding centers in order to “balance the budget.”

->Take Action. To learn more about this issue and to take action Click Here and send an email to Jim Caswell, Director of the BLM, to keep wild horses and burros on our public lands safe.

CHINA, Go Fur Free!

say no to fur

Millions of cats and hundreds of thousands of dogs are tortured and killed for their fur in China. Thousands of PETA members, like you and me, have voiced their outrage at the treatment of animals in this year’s Olympic host country.
Unfortunately, the Chinese fur industry continues its unrepentant slaughter of dogs and cats, whose skins are often deliberately mislabeled as “Asian Jackal” or “rabbit” when sold overseas. While the attention of the world is on the Olympic Games, we want to spotlight this cruel practice and invoke worldwide pressure against the Chinese fur industry.

Now more than ever, we need your help to make sure as many people as possible know about the suffering that goes into the production of every fur garment.

->Take Action. Please take a moment to help us in our work to stop the suffering of animals caught in the fur trade in China and around the world by taking the following critical actions:

1- Sign the fur-free pledge, and join the thousands of compassionate people around the world who have pledged never to purchase or wear animal skin. If you’ve already signed the pledge, please ask your family members, friends, and coworkers to do the same.

2- Watch and share the shocking undercover video with as many people as you can before the Games end on August 24. The goal is to expose the horror of the Chinese fur industry to 1 million viewers before the closing ceremonies.

Open the cage door

1- Help Pass a Historic Ballot Initiative
This November, Californians will be asked to vote on a citizen initiative that would give farm animals some of the most basic freedoms — such as the freedom to lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs. Called Proposition 2, the measure will have a direct impact on 20 million of California’s farm animals — and is expected to lead to a sea change in how farm animals are treated across the nation.

->Take Action. Today, whether you live in California or not, I invite you to pledge to help farm animals by joining the Yes on Prop 2 campaign.

2- Help All Creatures Great and Small
Interested in the link between animals and religion? Active in a church, synagogue, mosque, or other place of worship? If so, I encourage you to join our new All Creatures Great and Small campaign, which raises awareness about our moral responsibilities to animals, including those raised for food.

->Take Action. Today I invite you to take the All Creatures Great and Small pledge to make more humane food choices.

Amazon.com Friend or Foe?

On Tuesday, in another blow to animal fighters, a settlement was reached with one of the defendants in a federal lawsuit challenging the sale of two criminal animal fighting magazines on Amazon.com violating the federal Animal Welfare Act. The publishers of “The Gamecock” magazine agreed to permanently change the magazine’s format to exclude all ads for fighting animals, knives, and other illegal paraphernalia, and to stop selling the magazine on Amazon.com until it has demonstrated full compliance with federal law for one year. But sadly, Amazon.com has vowed to fight on in the case, arguing that the First Amendment gives it the right to sell illegal animal fighting contraband. It wants to remain the only online retailer selling “The Feathered Warrior,” soon to be the sole remaining cockfighting trade publication sold on Amazon.com in violation of federal law.

->Take Action. Tell Amazon.com what you think of its decision to continue profiting from illegal animal fighting.

Say NO To Circus Acts

Please help the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF)—Florida’s only statewide animal protection organization—speak up for animals in circuses! Encourage school boards to enact policies against ticket giveaways and field trips to animal circuses.
Animals suffer in circuses, forced to perform confusing and painful acts repeatedly, subjected to constant beatings, and chained most of their lives, these animals are counting on us to stop their suffering. Together we can do it!

->Take Action. It is through ARFF’s persistence that we will continue to push public opinion and action away from animal circuses in Florida and toward compassion. Your help is needed.

Please join ARFF today. With your donation, you will receive ARFF’s quarterly newsletter and periodic e-mail updates. Most importantly, you will be adding your support to ARFF’s vital campaigns for animals.

Visit ARFF for more ways you can help bring a solution to this situation.

Death Is Not Art

Stop Guillermo Vargas, a Central American native, from killing another innocent animal as his sick idea of art.
Last November Guillermo Vargas, at the Biennale of Visual Arts of the Central American Isthmus, held in Honduras, captured a dog, tied it to a wal in the gallery of art, and left it to die without food or water. This November he planned to repeat this horrendous act.

->Take Action. Sign the petition to act against such cruelty and email the Ministry of Tourism, telling them if they promote people who abuse animals, we will not consider Costa Rica as a vacation spot.

Send a letter: We want to deluge them with letters, to make them think twice about what they are doing. If you would like to send a letter, you may use the sample below or you can use it as a model. You can check the other two cases on the net, they have also gone unpunished.

email letter to: info@tourism-costarica.com

Dear All:

I am sure you are aware of the uproar all over the world demanding the removal of the Costa Rican national Guillermo Vargas as a representative of his country to the VI Biennale of Visual Arts of the Central American Isthmus, to be held in Honduras.

More than 1.8 million people have signed the petition, and the numbers increase every day. We are requesting that the Costa Rican authorities intervene, because of the continually negative response from the body which is sponsoring Vargas in the event – Art Impresarios, whose president is the prestigious architect, Mr. Ronald Zürcher.

You should know that we who care about animals take very special notice of countries who do not respect the rights of animals, and we bear that in mind when we chose a vacation spot. In your country right now we know of three glaring cases which have not yet been resolved:

1 – The case of Vargas
2 – The case of Barahona (the cat-eater)
3 – The case of Isla Cocos

This global campaign is having a very negative collateral effect on Costa Rica’s image, and in particular it affects how the world views your tourist industry. For this reason, we urge you to intervene to put an end to the bad publicity, which is very damaging to your beautiful country.

The way to do it is to stop Guillermo Vargas representing Costa Rica in the Biennale this coming November.

Yours sincerely,

Name
Country

Make Your Workplace Cruelty-Free

During the upcoming World Week for Animals in Laboratories (April 20-26), speak up for the millions of birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, and other domestic and wild animals who are subjected to cruel experiments in the name of science each year.

Refusing to buy from companies that test products on animals is the easiest and most effective way to stop companies from poisoning, blinding, and killing animals. You also can take steps to make your workplace cruelty-free by urging your employer to purchase hand soap and cleaning products only from companies that do not test products on animals, like Method and the Caldrea Company.

->Take Action. Check out CaringConsumer.com for information about which companies test products on animals.

Protect Threatened Species & Tropical Forests

Each year at this time in the federal budget cycle, we have a huge opportunity to help countless species and habitats by urging members of Congress to speak out for U.S. funding that protects nature in developing countries.

->Take Action. Ask Congress to support three major environmental initiatives, two of which are in danger of being woefully underfunded.

Protect The Bears!

The U.S. House of Representatives is considering an important wildlife bill that has the potential to save the lives of tens of thousands of bears worldwide. Your U.S. Representative needs to hear your support today.
Please urge your U.S. Rep.to co-sponsor this bill to protect bears!

The HSUS has been investigating and fighting against puppy mills for decades. With your help, we can advance our fight to stop puppy mills and the tragic consequences of pet overpopulation.
->Take Action. Ask your federal legislators to crack down on puppy mills. Get the word out about puppy mills: write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Visit StopPuppyMills.org to educate yourself.

Speak Out for Gopher Tortoises!

The state still doesn’t require biologist-recommended “soft release” relocations. Soft-release uses large enclosures and post-release monitoring to help tortoises gradually acclimate to their new surroundings, so they are less likely to try and find their way back or suffer from disease, predation, starvation, or encounters with speeding cars.

And, worse yet, many unused, “grandfathered” kill permits still allow the entombment of thousands more tortoises. Burial alive is a particularly horrible death for tortoises: their slow metabolic rate means that they suffer for months as they gradually suffocate, dehydrate, and starve to death.

->Take Action. At its upcoming April 10 meeting, the FWC will consider guidelines that would require soft-release relocations for most developments of tortoise habitat. Please send an email to FWC Commissioners today. Urge them to immediately start requiring a humane, soft-release method for all gopher tortoise relocations and to stop allowing developers with “grandfathered” permits to bury tortoises alive.

Visit The Humane Society of the United States for more details.

For A Free Tibet

After decades of repression, the Tibetan people are crying out to the world for change. The spotlight of the upcoming Olympic Games is now on China, and Tibetan Nobel peace prize winner the Dalai Lama is calling to end all riots and violence through restraint and dialogue–he urgently needs the support of the world’s people.
China’s hardliners are lashing out publicly at the Dalai Lama–but we’re told that President Hu Jintao may believe dialogue is the best hope for stability in Tibet. China’s leadership is right now considering a crucial choice between repression and dialogue that could determine Tibet’s–and China’s–future.

->Take Action. We can affect this historic choice. CLICK HERE to join the global outcry, and then share with friends and family right away.

Make the Sexual Abuse of Animals Illegal in Florida

While 34 states make bestiality a crime, the sexual abuse of animals remains legal in Florida. It is not only cruel but also an indicator of other violent and sexually deviant crimes. A study published in 2002 found that 96% of juveniles who had engaged in sex with nonhuman animals also admitted to sex offenses against humans. Because bestiality is legal in Florida, prosecutors are unable to address this cruelty.
Fortunately, legislation (S.B. 744/H.B. 1227) has been introduced to make the sexual abuse of animals a crime in Florida.

->Take Action. Please contact your state senator and state representative to express your support for S.B. 744/H.B. 1227. CLICK HERE to look up your state legislators and phone numbers. Please make a brief, polite phone call to urge support for legislation to make the sexual abuse of animals illegal.
When making your call, you will likely speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to your legislator. Remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say: “Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town] to ask [legislator's name] to support S.B. 744/H.B. 1227 to make the sexual abuse of animals illegal in Florida. 34 states make this a crime and Florida needs to join them. Thank you.”
After making your calls, please SEND a follow-up email to your legislators in support of legislation to make the sexual abuse of animals a crime in Florida.

Speak Up For Baby Seals & Help End the Seal Slaughter

Animal abusers—whether individuals, corporations, or governments—try to operate very quietly so that the cries of animals and the voices of compassionate people will not be heard.
Today, I humbly ask you to speak up for baby harp seals, hundreds of thousands of whom will soon be slaughtered in the annual Canadian seal hunt.

->Take Action. If you haven’t done so yet, please SIGN Peta’s global petition to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to end Canada’s sponsorship of this atrocity. Then ask your family and friends to join you in signing the petition … together we can make a huge difference in the world.

Urge Australia to Stop Lamb Mutilations!

Wonderful news! The international clothing giant H&M recently pledged to stop buying wool from lambs who have been mulesed. H&M’s compassionate decision was the catalyst for a huge show of support for sheep from 17 other major Swedish retailers who also pledged to boycott this cruel mutilation… many other retailers around the world are also seriously considering to discontinue support such cruelty.
Australian sheep need your help today to put the final nail in the coffin of cruel mulesing mutilations. Please send a message to Australia’s new prime minister, Kevin Rudd, to remind him that retailers and consumers around the world won’t stand by while Australian sheep are subjected to such an inhumane procedure, and ask him to ban cruel mulesing mutilations immediately.

Tell TNT What You Think of Its Ringling Reality Show

In recent years, PETA caught Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus handlers aggressively hooking elephants with a bullhook and forcing lame elephants to perform. Recently, TNT announced plans to air a reality show featuring the notorious animal-abusing circus.

Please contact Turner Entertainment president Steve Koonin and producers Marl Wolper and Al Hassas and urge them to abandon plans to promote Ringling. Undoubtedly, one reality that will be omitted from the show is the bullhook abuse of elephants, the whipping of tigers, and the constant confinement of all the animals.

Remind TNT and show producers that after learning of the abuse inherent in animal circuses, major corporations like Denny’s, Lukoil, General Mills, Burger King, Liz Claiborne, MasterCard, Visa, and Sears, Roebuck & Co. ended their promotions of circuses like Ringling and UniverSoul.

Please speak up for animals suffering in Ringling’s circus. Ask TNT to abandon plans to air a Ringling reality show that will surely ignore the abuses that animals endure behind the scenes.

Thank you for all that you do for the animals!
